A record number of Dutch households are asking for debt relief, according to 2009 figures published by social banking group NVVK.
Some 53,000 households asked for help last year, which is 10,000 more than the previous year.
NVVK says that the cases are becoming more complicated, with up to 17 creditors per household. The economic crisis has caused middle-income families to be hit as well. They used to be able to take out higher loans and are now faced with higher debts.
The average debt has gone up to 33,000 euros. NVVK says people are often unable to judge how much they can spend every month.
