At least five people died in the explosion at the Kleen Energy power plant near the US town of Middletown, Connecticut. Twelve people were injured.
The blast could be heard dozens of kilometres away. Mayor Sebastian Giuliano said the explosion was caused by a gas leak and ruled out terrorism.
The Kleen Energy plant was still under construction and around 50 people were at work on the site. It's possible there are still people dead or injured under the rubble.
