The death toll as a result of landslides and flooding in Brazil has risen. The authorities of the state Rio de Janeiro report more than 60 deaths. Many more people are missing.
Coastal resort Angra dos Reis has been hard hit, as is the nearby tourist island Ilha Grande, where mudslides swept away a hotel. Many houses have also been destroyed.
In the city of Cunha, in the neighbouring state of Sao Paulo, at least six tourists have been killed. Rescue workers are searching for missing persons and bodies.
Torrential rains have cause the landslides and flooding. The rain is abating somewhat but the authorities are calling on everyone living in risk areas to move elsewhere. The landslides are particularly dangerous on the steep slopes surrounding the city, which are covered by sprawling slums.
