Transavia pilot Julio Poch is suspected of torture and a number of disappearances, as well as being involved in the notorious death flights in Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s.
In addition to his involvement in the death flights, the Argentinian Public Prosecution Office is investigating the pilot in connection with 950 cases of torture in which some people died. He is also under investigation for the disappearances of a young Swedish woman, two French nuns and Argentinian journalist Rodolfo Walsh.
Argentina has formally requested the extradition of the pilot. Last week he was arrested in Valencia at the request of the Argentinian authorities just before he was due to take off on a flight to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.
According to official government figures, 11,000 opponents of the junta disappeared during the 1976 to 1983 dictatorship. At least 1000 people were drugged and thrown out of planes into the sea. Julio Poch was allegedly a pilot on many of these death flights. Human rights groups say at least 30,000 people were murdered by the regime.
