Dalai Lama forgives Dutch PM

Published on : 2 June 2009 - 2:15pm | By Willem Offenberg
More about:

Tibet's spiritual leader, who begins a visit to the Netherlands this week, says he does not blame Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende for bowing to Chinese pressure and denying him an official welcome.

The Dalai Lama explains his position in a Dutch television interview recorded at his residence-in-exile in Dharamsala, India. Our correspondent Willem Offenberg (pictured) was in attendance.

The Tibetans' spiritual leader understands that Mr Balkenende does not want to jeopardise the Netherlands' economic interests with China. Professing a special bond with the Netherlands, he regards the fact that other government leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were willing to shake him by the hand as their own personal decision.

"I do not want to embarrass anyone. I am not looking for problems,"

he says in an interview with former Dutch MP, Paul Rosenmöller.

"It is up to you! Whether they give me a formal welcome or not, deep in their hearts, all leaders of the free world support the Tibetan cause. I am convinced of this."

Actual autonomy
A refugee himself - having fled to India in 1959 - the Dalai Lama acknowledges that the Dutch people have done a great deal for Tibetan refugees. Tibetan support committees can also count on the Netherlands, even though the Dutch government recognises Tibet as Chinese territory, as do all the other EU member states.

The Chinese say Tibet enjoys a special status as an autonomous region, but absolutely refuse to tolerate any talk of independence. In his TV interview, the Dalai Lama also advocates 'actual autonomy', with a greater say, not just in Tibet but in other areas of China which are home to large numbers of Tibetans. He wants all of this to take place within the legal framework of the Chinese constitution. "I too come from a province outside of Tibet," he points out.

Branded a separatist
China regards this position as treason, as an attempt to divide the country. The Dalai Lama has been branded a separatist. "They do not believe me, the Chinese hawks," he says. "But we do not want separatism."

We are given a warm welcome in Dharamsala. The Dutch guests, the TV crew and I, after undergoing a thorough inspection and taking a walk in the rose garden, are ushered into the Dalai Lama's personal quarters. We are preceded by a group of Buddhist monks, all of whom have their photograph taken with His Holiness.

A simple monk
Just as in an interview I had with him in September 2007, (see photograph) the Dalai Lama insists several times that his role is not that of a freedom fighter whose aim is to force a change in China's position by resorting to hunger strikes or other such methods. "I am and remain a simple monk," he says.

For the Dalai Lama, it is the spiritual quest that remains key. At the time, he also said

"If I were a freedom fighter without spiritual worth, I might just as well commit suicide. I have no weapons, other than truth and justice."

Temporary setback
He refutes suggestions that the Chinese are biding their time until his death - he will be 74 this summer - and that once he is gone, the issue of Tibet will simply fade away. He speaks of his death as a temporary setback in the struggle.

"Tibetan resilience, based on higher values, will not be lost. Tibetans have greater compassion than communists."

How does it feel to fight for autonomy for fifty years without achieving any results? Is he disappointed? Does he admit that he has failed as a political leader? The Dalai Lama neatly sidesteps such questions. His interviewer is not able to pin him down. After the interview, the Dalai Lama smiles as he puts his head in his hands, as if he wants to emphasise that the critical questions cannot touch him. It is also a sign of his Buddhist compassion.

Jun 4, 2009 Branded a separatist China regards this position as treason, as an attempt to divide the country. The Dalai Lama has been branded a separatist. "They do not believe me, the Chinese hawks," he says. "But we do not want separatism." To whom Chinese authory fear is not Dalai Lama is to Mr. Confucius Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes. Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses. Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it. Ignorance is the night of the mind, but a night without moon and star. Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness. The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved.

I am not a fan of the Dalai Lama, but I don't see where any country owes an explanation to China why it is, or isn't, receiving him.
Aussie 27 July 2009 - 8:31pm
Try to see how the US would react if any country try to receive Bin Ladin. To China, Dalai Lama is just as terrorist as Bin Ladin to US. Dalai uses the US money to engage in terrorist activities in the border of China. If you cannot understand such simply facts, you have obviously be brainwashed too much by the Free Tibet propaganda in your local media.

Liborio, Indian govt is supporting Dalai and his people:Read this about what Indians are doing for them unlike lip-service from others and I haven't read anywhere from any Tibetan, a word of gratitude for the Indians for this assistance for the past 50 years! Tibetan refugees Following the footsteps of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama more than 150,000 Tibetan refugees have fled to India during the past 50 years. Armed forces of People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China entered Tibet in 1950 and began consolidation of control over Tibet during the reign of the young 14th Dalai Lama. The flash point came in March 1959 when Chinese forces tried to disperse a crowd in front of the Norbulingka palace where Dalai Lama was staying. Consequently, due to the desperate situation of bloodshed in the Tibetan capital Lhasa, and a suspected coup attempt on the Dalai Lama by Chinese army, the Dalai Lama fled to India. He was followed by a fleet of about 80,000 Tibetan refugees. The Dalai Lama sought asylum in India. After a series of discussions between the Dalai Lama and Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Indian Prime Minister, who agreed to provide all assistance to the Tibetan Refugees to settle down in India for some time, till their eventual return (as it was visualized at that time). Accordingly Government of Mysore (as Karnataka state was called at that time) allotted nearly 3,000 acres (12 km2) of land at Bylakuppe in Mysore district in Karnataka in 1960 and the first ever Tibetan exile settlement namely Lugsung Samdupling came into existence in 1961. A few years later another settlement namely Tibetan Dickey Larsoe also called as TDL was established. This was followed by the establishment of three more settlements in Karnataka state making it the state with the largest Tibetan refugee population. Rabgayling settlement was created in Gurupura village near Hunsur, Dhondenling was established at Oderapalya near Kollegal and Doeguling settlement came into being at Mundgod in Uttara Kannada district all in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. After that more and more Indian states provided land for Tibetan refugees. The government of India build special schools for Tibetans that provide free education, health care and scholarships for those students who excel in schools. There are a few reserved medical and civil engineering seats for Tibetans. Tibetans live in India with a stay permit which is processed through a document called Registration Certificate (RC). It is renewed every year. In some areas it is renewed every six months. Every Tibetan refugee above age the 16 must register for the stay permit. However, RC is not issued to new arrival refugees, which makes life hard and precarious for them. For Tibetans to travel abroad, the government of India issues another document called Yellow Book, which is an Identity Certificate. Without RC, Yellow Book cannot be processed. It is therefore, proving extremely difficult for new refugees. The Yellow Book, on the other hand takes one year to process. In some cases, it may take two years before it is acquired. The Dalai Lama established the Tibetan government-in-exile in India. It is based in Dharamshala in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The exile government looks after the welfare of the Tibetans in India, coordinates socio-political activities of the Tibetans around the world and lead the Tibetan movement for a Free Tibet and protection of Tibet's environment. At present the population of the Tibetan refugees in India is estimated to be around 120,000. -Wikipedia for more information:http://www.unhcr.org/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/refworld/rwmain?docid=3f51f90821

Jun 2, 2009 WE CALL TO ALL RELIGIOUS LEADERS For the Dalai Lama, it is the spiritual quest that remains key. At the time, he also said "If I were a freedom fighter without spiritual worth, I might just as well commit suicide. I have no weapons, other than truth and justice." We don't thing so the most power weapon when we deal with humanbeing, not with besty What yet not understand religious leader is that when the Atman comes down to material body, loss some anality property and is easy to be confuse by its sense of armony. That is why yogies said activelly paceful, but pasively ative. Only with separatism and independence the tebetain people can survive. What is the intolerance of the Free World? Tibet was always Independent of Main Land China as any country of EU or State of the USA.

''Dalai Lama forgives Dutch PM''...Forgive? Has the Dutch PM committed a sin? Even the Indian government who has given asylum to Dalai Lama and his people since 1959, has ambivalent policy on Tibet... The following is an excerpt from and article by Dr. Subramanian Swamy, economist, long-time China expert and former Cabinet Minister: Delving into history, the political record of the past 50 years, and security affairs, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, economist, long-time China expert and former Cabinet Minister, argues that India should abandon its "ambivalent policy" on Tibet and the Dalai L ama, and abandon all "misperceptions and misplaced adventurism" on the critical question. He contends that unless the Indian government acts sincerely to get its mind "purged" of British colonial "duplicity on Tibet", remove "India's blind spot on Tibet" , and reassure China through meaningful actions that it accepts Tibet as an integral part of China, Sino-Indian relations cannot become close, friendly and warm. This article is based on excerpts from the author's forthcoming book, India's China Persp ective. ''SOME Indians are sentimental about the status of Tibet in China. There is the undercurrent of pan-Hinduism that is responsible for this sentiment. But do such people realise the national security consequence of such a sentiment? If India promotes Tibetan independence, cannot China promote Kashmiri, Assamese, Naga and Punjabi secession? Have not Tibetan governments from 1890 to 1950 laid claim to Sikkim, Bhutan and the whole of Arunachal Pradesh? Can India accept these consequential claims of an independ ent Tibet? On November 18, 1950, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to his colleague, Sardar Patel: "We cannot save Tibet, as we should have liked to do, and our very attempt to save it might well bring greater trouble to it. It would be unfair to Tibet for us t o bring this trouble upon her without having the capacity to help her effectively. It may be possible, however, that we might be able to help Tibet to retain a large measure of her autonomy." Then Nehru added the following, the significance of which is relevant even today: "It must be remembered that neither the U.K., nor the USA, nor indeed any other power is particularly interested in Tibet or in the future of that country. What they are in terested in is, embarrassing China."

''Dalai Lama forgives Dutch PM''...Forgive? Has the Dutch PM committed a sin?" Yes the PM did sin. The PM's ignorance of the plight of the people and his ignorance to support the government of China was a sin. He should have not supported China or Tibet. He should have allowed the Dalai Lama, a person who committed no crime to enter the Netherlands. By getting involved between China and the Dalai Lama he caused an injury to one of the parties. Ignorance was the sin.
