Dairy farmers dump milk in protest

Published on 21 September 2009 - 12:27pm
More about:

Dairy farmers across Europe are dumping an estimated 25 million litres of milk on their pastures in protest against low milk prices.

In Brussels on Monday afternoon, farmers will hand European Commission Chair Jose Manuel Barroso a petition in which they demand the EU take action against the low prices. Dairy farmers get 20 cents a litre for their milk, while production costs are twice that amount. The European Milk Board reports that more than 80,000 dairy farmers are refusing to supply milk.
