Cut benefit for burqa-wearers says mayor

Published on 28 September 2009 - 9:56am
More about:

Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen says women who fail to find a job because they wear a burqa should not receive unemployment benefit. If you are not prepared to compromise, he adds, you cannot expect to receive benefits intended for those genuinely trying to find employment.

Speaking in an interview in the daily newspaper Trouw, Mayor Cohen emphasized that he is opposed to a general ban on the burqa, since it is an expression of religious belief. However, in situations in which contact with other people is necessary, such as at school or in the workplace, he argues that women should choose a less restrictive head covering.

In 2007 an Amsterdam court stopped the council in nearby Diemen from cutting a woman's benefit for wearing a burqa. The Lower House of parliament then introduced a motion to allow councils to reduce benefits for burqa-wearers. A motion to halt benefits altogether was supported only by Geert Wilders' right-wing Freedom Party.

so exactly how many people in receipt of an unemployment benefit in Amsterdam actually wear a burka to their job interviews then? If its three, do we really have to begrudge them their uitkering any more than we have ever given any thought to the white dutch uneducated guy who goes to job interviews covered in tattoos, piercings, jeans around his crotch and white cap, but who isnt in the headlines every week?

Here we go again, Burka this and Burka that, and I yet have to see a person wearing a Burka in Holland. I have never seen a woman wearing a Burka with the exception of CNN and BBC news. How about stop giving free handouts to people who are not severely handicapped or elderly? Make the law much more simple and less discriminatory and insulting.

I submit that it is the system that is broken, not the burqa wearers. Stop paying people money to look for work. God forbid that people be held responsible for the fact that (1) they are out of work, (2) the manner in which they look for work or (3) the results thereof. All socialism is one group of people living at the expense of the others. The inevitable result is that nearly everyone believes they are entitled to the proceeds of some piece of plunder, whether that be "free" benefits to look for work, "free education", "free healthcare" etc. I know there will be many who argue against this statement, but before you do you should at least read the historical arguments for and against socialism. As for the arguments against, I highly suggest Bastiat's "The Law", which is probably the most calm, cogent and logical treatment. have a good day

What is being demanded here, is that the general tax paying population support a particular religious belief as held by women wearing burqas. The women wearing burqas are essentially demanding that the tax base support them while they find a job where they can wear their chosen clothing. What about a religion that demands no cloths being worn. Would you shop where there are a lot of naked folks? The majority is being forced to accept a very minority view, and not only accept but to provide tax based support to them.

Its really simple. I am going to get into a skinhead outfit, nazi tats and all, and look for work. I will not find any because what I represent is reprehensable to the vast majority of citizens. Why should I pay for your your anti-social image Ditto with female mutilation, burkas and the medieval sillyness that is orthodox islam. My ancestors fought to effect the enlightenment. Go home , hate jews, stay illiterate and have 20 kids in your own cesspool.
Q 28 September 2009 - 3:34pm
Ifit is true that your "ancestors fought to effect the enlightenment"they probably would be quite dissapointed on you... I take it that the ancestors you mention fought for democracy and individual freedom, probably (taking in account the timeline) they had to fight against cristhians of all shapes, bankers, monarchs and other parasites and supporting the opressed, the illitertaed and the dispossesed... why dont you do the same and try to help those who are in darkness instead of just condeming them to anoth 500 years of religious stigmatisation? you sound as fascist as those your ancestors opposed to.

Outlaw the burka, and outlaw islam altogether. They are terrorists and murders. Outlaw all religions as they are parasites on humanity.
John Giles 28 September 2009 - 1:29pm
Why are you Dutch obsessed with burqas - how mant people wear them in Holland anyway? None, I guess - or so few it doesn't really matter. This is kind of pathetic.
Q 28 September 2009 - 1:29pm
in any case what he should do is investigate who is deniing a job because of religious believes since this goes agianst the human rights chart (perhaps this little major needs to re-read it). Or is the same going to be happening with any religious symbol from any other confession? with that I could even agree...

As the adage goes "When in Rome do as the Roman's do". An employer has every right to determine the face of the company. I would hate to be served by someone who I cannot make facial contact with. If you insist on that right than you should go back to the country where it is the norm much less use that as excuse to get full benefits. It appears that you support free loaders!!
Q 29 September 2009 - 12:07pm
I see your point, it makes sense on a pure market economy. Hoever, I do not agree with eliminating the unemployment subsidy since, following your argument, if I want to become an stewaredress and I cant because I am so terribly ugly, shoudl I loose my unemployment benefits while I look for another job outside that sector or do I get surgery? (and sorry, my english is not so good so I do not understand you rlast sentence about "free loaders"...)
