A pilot for the Curaçao-based Divi Divi Airlines has died following an emergency landing in the waters off the island of Bonaire. Curaçao and Bonaire lie close to the coast of South America in the Caribbean.
The plane crashed after one of its engines failed, for reasons that have not yet been discovered. The nine passengers managed to escape from the plane before it sank but were unable to free the unconscious pilot, who was trapped by his safety belt. None of the passengers were seriously injured.
Divi Divi is small regional airline that makes eight flights a day between Curaçao and Bonaire. The plane that crashed was a British Norman Islander.
