They are sprouting up all over the world: Cruyff Courts, soccer pitches named after the Netherlands’ best known footballer of all time, Johan Cruyff. Modern all-weather pitches to replace old playing fields, which have been forced to make way for apartments, offices and shops in many towns and cities.
A total of 126 Cruyff Courts have been built in the Netherlands. Now the idea is catching on from Morocco to Brazil, England to Uganda and Japan to the Caribbean. The fields which bear the name of the legendary number 14 Ajax player can be found in exactly 14 countries outside the Netherlands. The idea is an initiative of the Johan Cruyff Foundation, which happens to be celebrating its 14th anniversary this year. The anniversary will be marked by a second Cruyff Court in Curaçao. This time it will be named after Ajax player Gregory van der Wiel, who is officially opening the pitch on, yes, the 14th of June.
Here is an overview of the Cruyff Courts all over the world.
