Coptic Christians' Amsterdam protest

Published on 16 January 2010 - 10:32pm
More about:

Around 2000 Coptic Christians demonstrated on Amsterdam’s Dam Square on Saturday against religious violence in Egypt.

At the beginning of the month, six Coptic Christians were shot dead in front of a church in Egypt where they had just attended mass. The killer is thought to have been a Muslim.

The demonstrators, who said Coptic Christians are systematically oppressed in Egypt, demanded better protection from violence and a trial for the killer of the six.

Copts account for nearly 10 percent of Egypt's mainly Muslim population of 80 million. They are the Middle East's largest Christian community.
