Thousands of opponents of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez have marched in the streets of Colombian cities in protest against what they say is meddling by the Venezuelan leader in Colombia's affairs. President Chavez recently criticised Colombia for allowing the United States to station 800 troops at seven Colombian bases.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe countered that the presence of US troops would help in the war against drugs and left-wing rebels.
There were smaller protests against the Venezuelan president in the US, Spain and Venezuela. The protests were organised via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Supporters of President Chavez held a counter-demonstration in the Venezuelan capital Caracas.
