Colombia’s two largest guerilla groups, the FARC and ELN, have announced plans to cooperate in their fight against the government of President Alvaro Uribe.
The groups announced the move in a joint statement published on the New Colombia News Agency (ANNCOL) website, which is sympathetic to their cause.
The agreement is striking as in the past the two groups fought not only the government but also each other. The movements appear to have been driven into each other’s arms by the ongoing government offensive, in which the rebels have suffered a number of defeats.
The Colombian army announced on Wednesday that it had killed at least 11 FARC rebels in an air strike. Among the dead was FARC commander Ruben Garcia, known as Danilo.
