Colombia turns to UN over Venezuelan wartalk

Published on 9 November 2009 - 10:15am
More about:

Colombia is considering going to the United Nations Security Council following comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

In his weekly radio and television programme Aló Presidente, President Chávez said he fears a US-led attack from neighbouring Colombia. He told the Venezuelan army and people to prepare for a possible war.

His comments come after Colombia signed a military cooperation pact with the United States, putting seven Colombian military bases at the disposal of the US. Bogota says it has no hostile intentions.

The Venezuelan government broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia in July. Since then, tensions between the two countries have increased dramatically.
