Energy consumption in the Netherlands during the first eight months of this year was almost four percent lower than it was in the same period last year.
The fall is principally due to the economic crisis, the Dutch statistics office CBS reports.
In particular fossil fuel consumption by Dutch factories has fallen, so carbon dioxide emissions have dropped correspondingly. CBS says the economic crisis has therefore helped bring the Netherlands closer to reaching its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
