Christian Democrats vote for Wilders--for now

Published on : 2 October 2010 - 6:46pm | By Carlos Lechner (photo: ANP)
More about:

A majority of Dutch Christian Democrats have voted in support of forming a coalition government backed in parliament by Geert Wilders' anti-Islam Freedom Party (PVV).

At a party conference, 68 percent voted in favour of cooperation with the PVV, 32 percent against. A record 4,500 members attended the gathering. The Christian Democrats intend to form a minority coalition with the right-wing VVD with parliamentary support by the PVV.

Freedom of religion
A number of prominent Christian Democrats spoke out against any form of cooperation with the PVV. They include two former prime ministers, past and present cabinet ministers and two current MPs.

They argued that the PVV discriminates people for their religion and skin colour whereas the CDA aims to bring people together. Former Prime Minister Piet de Jong said "freedom of religion was being sold". Another former prime minister, Dries van Agt, said the CDA would "mutilate" itself if it cooperated with the PVV.

Split
The issue is proving so contentious that is has been threatening to split the party in two. The CDA was founded 30 years ago, when two Protestant parties and a Catholic one decided to join forces.

Two caretaker ministers, Camiel Eurlings and Piet Hein Donner, urged the party to vote in favour of the coalition agreement and prevent the party from splitting in two. Mr Donner said it was feasible to cooperate with Mr Wilders and, at the same time, "build bridges".

Party leader Maxime Verhagen, responsible for brokering the coalition agreement, hailed the heated debates as a "feast of democracy". Opponents accused the party leadership of ignoring the 32-percent minority and considering the new government a done deal.

Parliamentary party
A definitive vote on the coalition agreement will be taken on Tuesday by the parliamentary party. Under the constitution, MPs are free to vote without any constraints.

Two MPs, Kathleen Ferrier en Ad Koppejan, voted against the coalition agreement at the party conference. Ms Ferrier described the anti-Islam PVV as a "one-issue movement". Mr Koppejan urged the CDA not to allow Mr Wilders to continue inciting hatred against Islam.

The two MPs have not yet said whether they will support or reject the coalition agreements when the vote is taken by the parliamentary party on Tuesday.

Substantial minority
After the vote at the party conference, several key Christian Democrats said those opposed to cooperating with the PVV represent "a substantial minority". They called on the two MPs to represent the opposition among the party members within the parliamentary party and vote against the coalition agreements.

Well, Jasmin, never fear. Geert isn't a media creation of RNW, he is a longterm threat to RNW! Geert and the PVV are well known outside of RNW circles around the world, especially in Europe. More and more coverage is given him because of his controversial situation, especially his current brush with the law. It is better he receive this attention to educate as many people as possible of how the Netherlands is at a crossroads in becoming a flashpiont in Europe towards countries turning inwards against themselves over the issues Geert brings forwards.

jasmin 4 October 2010 - 8:55pm / India

Whatever, Geert Wilders is good for RNW: his articles get maximum number of hits. I wonder what will happen to the media/RNW if Geert kept his thoughts to himself!! And, Geert wouldn't be what he is today- a celebrity politician but for RNW...I do not know if this is use or misuse of the power of word by media..Any thoughts, folks?

I thank you for your support, Hiram, however condition in its duration. Although that the access and useage of rights must be consisitent to be and remain rights is a fundamental fact.

Sandra, if Israel has one great friend in the world it is Canada, especially with Conservative Stephen Harper as Prime Minister. What I am reading in this forum tells me that Canada holds the greater degree of freedoms and respect for human rights than does most places in Western Europe. If anything you should be looking into Canadian affairs and the overall situation here compared to that in the Netherlands. If this is so bad as you say, why do a majority of the Dutch electorate vote against the PVV and Geert? Inside the CDA, even members there who are Jewish are claiming that their party should not allow itself any association with the PVV, no matter the circumstances, as seen in the article in this forum over the weekend CDA vote. As for my participation in this forum, even Hiram seems to welcome, or at least tolerate it. My affliiation as a listener and correspondent to RNW goes back to 1988, and I've not been asked since then not to contribute any form of idea or opinion to a service paid for by the Dutch taxpayer welcoming a worldwide audience. Should your opinions accuraately reflect your country's viewpoint on who or who may not have their voice democratically heard on its international communications, then no wonder there are serious difficulties to overcome in the Netherlands.

What took the CCD so long? They have more in common with Wilders than anybody else.

sandra v 4 October 2010 - 1:46pm / Nederland

David Berridge, why don´t you look in your own backyard and fix your own country and stay out of ours? You come from Canada? Canada has hardly any room to tell us over here how we should rule our country. Wilders is pro -Israel, that says a lot to many of us Jews who rarely have seen a politician in Europe have this much courage as Geert Wilders does. He risks his life for freedom of speech and he risks his life defending the rights of Jewish people, gay people, free speech etc. A lot more then can be said for those backward terrorists that do nothing but hate and kill innocent people. If it wasn´t for Geert Wilders, the Muslims that were dancing in the street here in Holland with joy at the 9-11 terrorist attack on USA soil would be still here in Netherlands showing disrespect for the victims of 9-11 openly like they did then. Wilders put a stop to it. Wilders also put a stop to those very same trouble makers that were harrassening innocent jewish families here in the Netherlands not so long ago.

Hiram2 4 October 2010 - 3:42pm

"David Berridge, why don´t you look in your own backyard and fix your own country and stay out of ours?"........Sandrav, I am not David Berridge but I believe just a few weeks ago, you were supporting Wilders right to speak in NYC. If Wilders has a right to speak out, don't you think David Berridge has the same right? As to the remainder of your opinions, I support 100%. Give him a break on freedom of speech, this time.

sandra v 15 October 2010 - 9:01pm / Nederland

True Hiram2. Sorry about that. You are right, I have to be fair if I want freedom of speech for everyone.
I am glad you agree on some of what I said though. This is the first politician we have had in Europe that is so courageous to stand up for freedom of speech, and for Israel and the Jewish people here in Europe as well. The man risks his life everyday, and it bothers me so much to see him falsely accused of being a racist. He is not at all a racist or a hateful person. As a matter of fact, Wilders was found not guilty on all charges of hate and discrimination today in court by the prosecution. Tonight I celebrate with my partner for Wilders freedom and our right to freedom of speech.

David Berridge 4 October 2010 - 2:39am / Canada

Just an editorial note. The word in the second sentence of my previous letter, should be anachronyism. My apologies.

David Berridge 4 October 2010 - 2:35am / Canada

Just an editorial note. The proper word is anachronyism to the sentence whereby Burke's words are changed in meaning. My apologies.

David Berridge 4 October 2010 - 2:32am / Canada

If nothing else, Geert is keeping us busy this weekend, Hiram!! That Geert will desire to create an anachronym of the wisdom of philosophical speakers of historical fame just to suit his own defintions of right and wrong, is definately something those in the Netherlands should be on guard against. especially those who are the most politically engaged in Dutch society. The members of the CDA who are specifically aware and historically conscious of this face standing up for themselves as well as standing against Geert. Faced with this challenge, may they have the strength and political will to live up to Burke's words, and not to Geert's twisting of them.

Hiram2 3 October 2010 - 5:38pm

"To paraphrase the saying by Edmund Burke: "All evil needs to triumph is for good men to stand aside and do nothing.".".........This has been Wilder's stance from the very beginning with his anti-Islamic stance. If good men stand aside and do nothing, evil men will terrorise the community. It happened in Germany, USSR, China and numerous other countries where good men stood aside and did nothing. Good point, David Berridge.

alanposting 3 October 2010 - 10:54am

....and i hope with Wilders out of the way, they can go ahead with their destruction of the Dutch way of life...don't just stop at 62 for retirement, why not raise it to 70. Thank god that smoke ban again will be enforced against small cafe business owners....while their at it, make it against the law to smoke at home....don't stop at half the red light district gone....get all of it. I just hope as you say, they have the "courage of their convictions".

David Berridge 3 October 2010 - 3:33am / Canada

Now that 32 per cent of the CDA support the dissenting MPs within its ranks, Geert is about to face the most critical juncture in his political career so far. To paraphrase the saying by Edmund Burke: "All evil needs to triumph is for good men to stand aside and do nothing.". These two CDA MPs carry the salvation of their party from its own undoing. One can only hope for the courage of their convictions to shine through in next week's Parliamentary vote.
