Chinese computer hackers have infiltrated the website of the Melbourne Film Festival, angry at the planned screening of a documentary about a Uighur activist.
They gained access to the festival’s homepage and placed a Chinese flag covered in slogans on it. The festival’s director and his staff were also inundated with insulting emails. Earlier in the week, China recalled three submissions to the festival.
The actions were prompted by the festival’s refusal to withdraw a documentary about the life of Uighur businesswoman Rebiya Kadeer, who now lives in exile in the United States. She is also the Chair of the World Uighur Congress.
The Chinese authorities believe she was the driving force behind the riots that broke out in the western province of Xinjiang earlier this month, when Han Chinese clashed with Uighur citizens. At least 190 people died in the riots.
Rebiya Kadeer is expected to attend the screening of the documentary, Ten Conditions of Love, on 8 August. Both she and the public will be provided with increased security.
