China has officially unveiled the world’s fastest high-speed train. It travels between the central city of Wuhan and the city of Guangzhou in the south, at speeds of up to 350 kilometres per hour. It covers the 1069 kilometres between the two cities in approximately three hours, on what is also the longest high-speed line in the world. The train is 400 metres long and can carry up to 1000 passengers in its 16 carriages.
The project was started in 2005. In the coming ten years, China wants to build up to 6000 more kilometres of high-speed lines. One of them would link the capital Beijing with the eastern port of Shanghai, 1318 kilometres distant.
