China recalls films from festival

Published on 23 July 2009 - 3:42pm
More about:

China has recalled three submissions to the Melbourne International Film Festival. It did so after the festival organisers refused to remove a documentary about a Uighur exile from the programme.

The documentary is about the life of Uighur businesswoman Rebiya Kadeer, who now lives in exile in the United States. China says she was one of the driving forces behind the riots that broke out in the western province of Xinjiang earlier this month, when Han Chinese clashed with Uighur citizens.

Rebiya Kadeer is expected to attend the screening of the documentary in Melbourne.
