China is demanding that the United States hand over 17 Chinese prisoners currently held in the Guantánamo Bay detention centre.
Beijing is fiercely opposed to Washington's plan to send the 17 members of China's predominantly Muslim Uighur minority to the Pacific island nation of Palau. For some time, The US has been trying to find countries willing to admit the Uighurs, who were taken prisoner in Afghanistan. Washington does not want to send the 17 back to China because they might be tortured there.
