China angry at Dalai Lama's Indian border visit

Published on 8 November 2009 - 11:02am
More about:

Relations between China and India have come under strain due to a visit by the Dalai Lama to a disputed border region in north-eastern India.

The Tibetan Buddhist leader is in Tawang, a town in the Himalayas close to the border with Tibet. Thousands of monks have gathered in Tawang to hear the Dalai Lama speak.

The Chinese government says the Dalai Lama's visit undermines China's territorial integrity. India in turn accuses China of occupying a large area of Indian territory in the western Himalayas. Relations between the two countries have been fragile since they fought a border war in 1962.
