Chad wants UN peacekeepers to pull out

Published on 28 January 2010 - 6:46pm
More about:

Chad is reported to be pushing for the withdrawal of United Nations peacekeepers. Diplomats say the Chadian government has requested a timetable for the pull-out of UN forces.

About 3000 UN blue helmets are in Chad to protect civilians from rebel groups and to take action if there are tensions with neighbouring Sudan. The mandate of the UN mission expires in March and Chad is said not to be willing to negotiate an extension.

If the mission in Chad stops, logistical problems will probably mean that the UN mission in the Central African Republic, which borders Chad, will not be able to continue.
