Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez will not attend Thursday’s South American climate meeting in the Brazilian city of Manaus. Mr Chávez says he does not have time.
Eight South American countries straddling the Amazon basin plus France are meeting in Manaus to agree on a “common stance” on saving the Amazon rainforest in the run-up to December’s Copenhagen climate summit.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will attend, as will his French counterpart Nicolas Sarcozy. French Guiana is an overseas department of France which partly lies in the Amazon region.
