The DSB Bank debacle
The DSB bank was the subject of controversy for much of 2009. Dutch TV covered customers' complaints about the large mortgage loans which came decked out with ever-changing single-premium insurance policies designed to pay off the original loan.
The Netherlands Central Bank has reported TV channel RTL Nieuws to the police for the leaking of confidential documents. The channel published seven documents on its website including a letter from a solicitor's office containing advice to the central bank. It dealt with claims against the failed DSB bank.
The central bank says that the broadcaster may have broken secrecy rules by unveiling the solicitor's document. The other published letters were from the Netherlands Central Bank to DSB Bank.
In its defence RTL told the press that publication of the documents was is in the general interest. They were used for a reconstruction of events surrounding the collapse of DSB Bank in October.
