Canary Islands hit by extreme rain

The Canary Islands have been hit by severe weather.

Heavy rain in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria has flooded residential areas. Tenerife is also badly effected by the extreme weather. Some schools on the island have closed.

The authorities are calling it the worst rain in 40 years. In some places 100 litres of rain has fallen per square metre, causing traffic chaos. Cars have even been washed off the roads by the flooding. The motorway between the capital Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz has been closed.
