Canada ups number of seal hunting permits

Published on 15 March 2010 - 11:18pm
More about:

The Canadian fisheries ministry has increased the total number of seals that hunters will be able to slaughter during the annual Atlantic hunting season, which begins later this month.

The quota for harp seals has risen to 330, 000, up from 280,000 last year. The fisheries ministry says the increase is due to the growing seal population in the waters east of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St Laurence. The harp seal population has tripled since the 1970s and is now estimated to be 6.9 million.

The ministry says the quotas for grey and hooded seals have not risen and hunters will only be allowed to kill 50,000 greys and 8,200 hooded seals. Around 6,000 Canadians take part in seal hunting on the Atlantic seaboard every year.

The increase in this year's quota is because of favorable ice conditions off "the front" of Newfoundland where the vast majority of sealing takes place. The lack of ice is in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The European Union proved themselves to be spineless in the face of uneducated protesters. Canadians stand up for one another, and don't think this insult to Atlantic Canadians will go unnoticed.

How can there be an increase when no babies are being born this year? It's the warmest year on record and there's no solid ice for the seals to give birth on. All the babies are being aborted in the water and drowning to death and the government is uping the quota because they are trying to have a school yard brawl with the Europeans? Are you kidding me? Who runs this government? A bunch of thugs?
