Cambodian PM visits disputed border area

Published on 6 February 2010 - 1:11pm
More about:

In Cambodia, Prime Minister Hun Sen has visited a disputed border area with Thailand. There he spoke with Thai border guards and was confronted by around 100 Thai demonstrators who say the 11th century Preah Vihear Temple complex claimed by Cambodia actually belongs to Thailand.

The border between the two countries has been disputed for decades. In 2008, four people died in violent clashes over the temple after it was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO. Last year, three people were killed in exchanges of gunfire.

The Thai-Cambodia border has never been fully demarcated, partly because it is still littered with landmines left over from decades of war in Cambodia.
