Syria and Saudi Arabia are calling for a government of national unity in Lebanon. Agreement between the two arch-rivals is seen as essential to the formation of a new Lebanese administration.
Lebanese elections took place last June, but no government has yet been formed. There is a political stalemate between the pro-Western coalition and the militant Shiite, pro-Syrian Hizbollah movement.
Syria is suspected of being behind the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri in 2005. He had close links with Saudi Arabia.
