The United Nations has called for an investigation into how Libya's ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi died. A Dutch-British team of forensic experts is ready to travel to Libya to conduct an independent inquiry. "This is in the interest of the National Transitional Council's continued credibility", spokesman Pim Volkers of the Independent Forensic Team said.
Images of Muammar Gaddafi's capture are raising questions about his death. The pictures clearly show that he was alive when captured. According to statements by the transitional council, he was killed in a firefight that broke after he was captured. The available images raise doubts about the accuracy of the official account.
UN Human Rights Council spokesman Rupert Colville said: "All in all, these images are very worrying. It is unclear how he died. Research is needed. According to the principles of international law, suspects of serious crimes should be brought to trial. Summary executions are completely illegal. It's quite a different story when somebody gets killed in combat." The UN Human Rights Council had already sent a mission to Libya to investigate allegations of murder, torture and other crimes. Colville says he expects the team will investigate Gaddafi's death too.
Pathologist ready
The Independent Forensic Team is ready to set off for Libya to start an independent inquiry, coordinator Pim Volkers said. "We've got eight people on standby. One of them is able to interrogate witnesses and potential suspects. We have people who can investigate on the spot of the incident itself. There's a video analyst, and a pathologist with two assistants ready to kick into action."
What exactly does Volkers' team want to investigate? "Whether Gaddafi was executed while he was shouting he was surrendering. That would have been a war crime. Or did he die in the heat of the battle? Then it is not a war crime. Those are the main things for the transitional council to be in the clear about if it wants to retain its credibility."
Volkers and his team will only launch the inquiry at the specific request and with the full cooperation of Libya's National Transitional Council.

Welcome to the new Libya.
Intolerant Islamist militias will turn the lives of Libyan women into a living hell.
Hundreds of thousands of Sub-Saharan Africans - those who could not escape - will be ruthlessly persecuted. Libya's natural wealth will be plundered.
That collection of anti-aircraft missiles appropriated by Islamists will be a supremely convincing reason for the "war on terror" in northern Africa to become eternal.
There will be blood - civil war blood, because Tripolitania will refuse to be ruled by backward Cyrenaica.
United States President Barack Obama said the death of Gaddafi means "we are seeing the strength of American leadership across the world". Washington paid no less than 80% of the operating costs of those dimwits at NATO (over $1 billion - which Occupy Wall Street could well denounce would be more helpful creating jobs in the US).
It was up to that majestic foreign policy strategist, US Vice President Joe Biden, to be starkly more enlightening than Obama; "In this case, America spent $2 billion and didn't lose a single life. This is more the prescription for how to deal with the world as we go forward than it has in the past."
World, you have been warned; this is how the empire will deal with you from now on.
