A number of prominent Dutchmen have called on the coalition mediators to promote a foreign police based on concern for the environmen and fighting poverty.
In an open letter, they write that the Netherlands should aspire to lead the world in tackling the challenges presented by the 21st century. In particular, they mention the economic crisis, the food crisis, the energy crisis and the climate crisis.
Those signing the letter include both bank chiefs and union leaders, politicians from the entire political spectrum as well as representatives of Jewish and Muslim organisations.
They denounce as unjust the fact that two billion people are living in poverty. They stress that our own prosperity and security depend on the progress the rest of the world can make.
