Brussels police demonstrate against violence

Published on 3 February 2010 - 7:14pm
More about:

In Brussels, hundreds of police officers have demonstrated as they say violence in the the Belgian capital against the police has increased.

The demonstrators marched from the city's court building to the palace of justice where unions met with Belgian Justice Minister Stefaan de Clerck. Unions say the meeting did not achieve anything.

Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme says he wants stiffer sentences for people who use violence against police officers and will make changes to administration regulations so that an extra 100 officers can police the streets.

The march comes after a policeman in Brussels was seriously injured in a shooting incident.
