The head of the provincial council in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, Ahmad Wali Karzai, survived an assassination attempt early today.

The convoy of the younger brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai was sprayed with rocket and machine-gun fire. The president's brother escaped unharmed, but his bodyguard was killed. He says the Taliban were responsible for the attack.
