Britain has raised its international terrorism threat level to severe, its second highest, meaning a terrorist attack is highly likely.
Home Secretary Alan Johnson stressed, however, there is no intelligence to suggest an attack is imminent. The change comes in response to the failed attempt to blow up a US airliner flying from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day. The threat level had been lowered from severe to substantial in July.
