The British prime minister, Gordon Brown, has called for an international meeting on combatting Islamic extremism in Yemen.
His call comes in response to last week's failed attempt to blow up a Delta-Northwest Airlines plane over Detroit. The Nigerian national responsible for the attempt says he was trained by al-Qaeda in Yemen. The meeting will take place on 28 January, in London, alongside a meeting about combating the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The British prime minister says the United States and the European Union back the proposal. Mr Brown also wants to invite Saudi Arabia and countries on the Persian Gulf.

Did Gordon Brown really say "" Islamic extremism "" - what he would have said a few months ago was "" anti-Islamic behaviour "" - but sorry now even this is wrong - the proper thing to say is "" terrorism or violent extremism. "" And "" fundamentalist and Jihadi "" will now simply be called "" criminals "" - like pick-pocketers in shopping centres or "" thugs "" up dark alleys - one wonders if the attendees will know what this meeting is about - so many code words will be in use !! "" Radicalisation "" will now be called "" brainwashing "" and there will no longer be a thing called "" Islamophobia "" - replaced with [??]!! Perhaps he thinks by changing the language - that somehow the reality will be changed.
