Bosnian town gets mayor after 14 months

Published on 19 December 2009 - 6:21pm
More about:

Bosnia Herzogovina's southern town of Mostar has elected a new mayor after 14 months of political deadlock. Ljubo Beslic, of the Bosnian Croat Democratic Union, was reelected with the backing of 17 deputies of the 35-seat municipal council.

The election was held after the High Representative to Bosnia, Valentin Inzko, revised the city's electoral law replacing a two-thirds majority, which proved beyond the reach of both Croat and Muslim parties, by simple majority. Mostar, Bosnia Herzegovina's main town, has been divided between ethnic Croats and Muslims since the 1992-1995 cvil war.
