Bomb attacks rock northwestern Pakistan

Published on 28 May 2009 - 7:35pm
More about:

A series of bomb attacks in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province has claimed the lives of at least 12 people.

In the provincial capital, Peshawar, at least 10 people died and dozens were injured in three attacks targetting a busy market and police. Two people were killed in Deri Ismail Khan when a bomb hidden in a rickshaw exploded.

On Wednesday, 24 people were killed and about 300 were injured in an attack in Lahore for which the Pakistani branch of the Taliban has claimed responsibility. In an internet message, the group said the attack was in retaliation for Pakistan's offensive against Taliban fighters in the Swat Valley. They are threatening more violence.
