Britain's former Prime Minister Tony Blair says he would also have ordered the invasion of Iraq if the intelligences services had not claimed the country had weapons of mass destruction.
In an interview with the BBC to be broadcast on Sunday, Mr Blair says that it was the danger posed by Sadam Hussein what convinced him to go ahead with the invasion. He adds that if WMDs had not been alleged to exist, other arguments would have been found to justify the invasion. Early next year Mr Blair is due to appear before the British commission investigating the Iraq war. In the run-up to the 2003 invasion, Mr Blair maintained that Iraq was capable of launching WMDs within 45 minutes. It later emerged Iraq did not have such weapons.
