Bin Laden Naked - laughing at extremism

Published on : 23 July 2009 - 11:00am | By RNW Radio Netherlands Worldwide
More about:

Bin Laden Naked is a comic book that illustrates the humorous contradictions of religious extremism. The graphic work provides insight into the religious extremism that is spreading in some Islamic countries, particularly after the rise of al-Qaeda and Bin Laden. Radio Netherlands Worldwide was given an exclusive pre-publication look.

A report by Abdelai Ragad

Algerian born Mohammed Sifaoui, a specialist in European Islam and the political Islamic groups, is the book's author.  Bin Laden Naked will be published by a Parisian publishing house on 11 September. Mr Sifaoui says it was no small feat creating Bin Laden Naked: "I had to exert a lot of effort in the few past months in order to make the book available for readers by September. It's the comic side of those who use Islam for political ends".

Cartoon characters
The idea of resorting to cartoons when writing about al-Qaeda and Bin Laden came to Mr Sifaoui in 2003. "It was an idea that came to me while studying in Pakistan and Afghanistan, preparing to produce a documentary film and a book, both entitled The Search for Bin Laden. The extremists I met during my trips were, I believe, like cartoon characters. My book consists of real incidents and not merely jokes about al-Qaeda and Bin Laden".

Sifaoui, who is an opponent of armed political Islamic groups, adds: "Those dark-minded people prove in every word and deed that they are comic and a source of amusement. It is this essential aspect that makes it easy for me to present the story of Islamic extremists and al-Qaeda in cartoons and pictures".

Prophet Mohammed cartoons
Mohammed Sifaoui began his work after the civil war in Algeria in the 1990s. He then fled to Paris, where he has been living for five years under the protection of the French police because of death threats. Mr Sifaoui says the Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammed and the subsequent reactions from radical Islamists inspired him to write the story of al-Qaeda and Bin Laden in comic form. The author believes that despite the serious and fearful face of the al-Qaeda and religious extremism issue, there is a comic byproduct of the contradictions and lack of logical reasoning seen in Islamic extremists. He also believes Bin Laden Naked is the first book of its kind.

The veil and mobile phone
Mr Sifaoui sees the Islamic veil, 'hijab,' as one of the most important and sensitive issues in the fundamentalist Islamic thinking. He says: "The attitude of the extremists towards women is psychologically deformed, because, on the one hand, they deny her very existence, hide her behind the burque or the garment, deny her independence and deal with her as a material object, but on the other hand they marry four women. Bin Laden himself has four wives."

And the writer believes that one of the most important sources of irony is that the extremist leaders never risk their own lives. This leads to the cynical throught: Will the suicide attackers be ushered into paradise while Bin Laden and his sons will be deprived of this enjoyment?

With this book, the author wants to send a message to Muslim youths, especially in Europe, that extremism can never co-exist with modernism. He says his book is a new and unique way to understand the nature of what he calls Islamism. It is "a text that helps us laugh at those who want to terrorize us".

Model of "Radical Islam"
What is a typical radical Islamist according to Mr Sifaoui? "I'm talking about the satanic groups, which call themselves sometimes Wahabies and other times Muslim Brothers and those who believe they obey God when they kill people". In his book he states: "Radical Islamists give us, during our day to day lives, the impression that they have come from another world or another century. Even in their way of dressing they differ very much with the normal styles of dress. They don't use neckties, but they use mobile phones, the Internet and prefer luxurious cars. This shows a schizophrenic relationship with modernism". For Mr Sifaoui presenting this behaviour in the form of  cartoons is not difficult, because the comic details can easily be portrayed.

Bin Laden Naked will be published by the Parisian "Baiz 12" Publishing House on 11 September and will be available in several languages.

Translation from the French

Desert pigeon

Back at Peshawar, I told Sheik Abdallah Azzem about my achievements and he encouraged me to persevere.

"I did good by recruiting this desert pigeon"

"I won’t tell him that I didn’t put a single dollar in"

The end of the war

At the end of the war, there were around forty thousand Arabs who came to Afghanistan for Jihad.

"I hope there will be enough space for everyone in heaven"

"...and especially enough virgins"

Bravo Osama!

"Bravo Osama, may God bless you!"

"Inch Allah! Like this, the brothers will have shelter when the Russian helicopters fly over the region"

In effect

"In fact, we got everything we asked for. Arms, equipment, instructors, locals, etc"

"Trust us, we will make real fighters out of them"

Europeans and Americans have become the Indians (native americans) of this age, the apache, the aztecs, the mayan and the incas all dissapeared to give way to the european lead civilazation, they invited the Europeans with good heart but unfortunate for them, they just come with two things on mind, how to get their resources and how to exterminate them. European and American leaders are doing what the Indian leaders did giving a way to the islamic civilazation, Christianity was first removed by the seculars and socialists just to make room for Islam the belief of the new Conquistadors. Just as the conquistadors of the indians did with their machine guns, they used on anyone in their path, in the same way Iran and Pakistan will use their atomic weapons first on America, they won't put their nukes on a Museum as the West is doing with all their might, they are just so scare of the ones who truly will use theirs. Is so sad to see a civilization die the West finally is under its knees by Iran and their Islamic followers, soon nobody will know what a Christian is. I wonder if they needed cheap labor why they didn't hired the catholic mexicans, at least they are not trying to convert others by killing.

I hope that 'Bin Laden Naked' is appropriately tough on our Islamic jihad enemies; and that the comic book is successful. I hope too that M. Sifaoui liaises with French weekly satirical magazine, 'Charlie Hebdo', which has had experience of legal pressure from certain Muslim organizations in France.

The Scandinivian world surely loves cartoons-it was Denmark a few years ago and now the Netherlands! On a serious note,I believe cartoons should be used properly-to criticize society`s ills. This Bin Laden cartoon is apt,he(Bin Laden) should stop[ making the world unsafe!

"Bin Laden himself has four wives"....Maybe that is why he is hiding.
Anonymous 1 August 2009 - 4:36pm
One wife is enough to make a laughing stock out of him.

There is no excess to laugh at those who want to terrorize us...I like it
Anonymous 28 July 2009 - 2:41pm
Excess in laughing might get you bored also.

Moderation is the silken string running through the pearl chain of all virtues. Nothing in excess.
Steve 22 July 2009 - 7:41pm
A moderate voice is very appreciated. Hopefully more moderate Muslims will find the courage to speak out against the senseless aggression carried out in the name of their religion.

Someone should draw a funny Mohammed cartoon.
Hiram 23 July 2009 - 1:39am
"Someone should draw a funny Mohammed cartoon.".....Why? Cartoons are usually amusing and funny? Making fun of Mohammed is no different then making fun at your mother, father, brother or sister. Would you offend someone you cared about or would you like it if someone else did it to you? It doesn't prove anything.
James 23 July 2009 - 10:12pm
It would prove that no organization or group of people are beyond criticism and satire. Mohammed cannot be offended, he no longer exists. For a group who makes the headlines as much as Muslims, Islam deserves to be analysed, criticised and debated thoroughly. Mohammed is not your father, mother or sister, he did some questionable things for a holy man (eg. 53 year old man having sex with 9 year old girl... hmmmmm). Muslims should be ashamed of themselves for believing such a terrible person is a messenger of any supreme being. A cartoon is easy way of conveying the brutal truth about Mohammed and Islam.
Hiram 23 July 2009 - 11:02pm
"A cartoon is easy way of conveying the brutal truth about Mohammed and Islam.".....Why do you need a cartoon to tell the "brutal truth" about Mohammed or anyone? The mere fact that terrorism is done in the name of Islamic Jihad should convey the "brutal truth" to the world but it still does not. The cartoons which portray Mohammed and Islam in a negative way does not persuade but deepens the hate. { Is it easy to convey the "brutal truth?" Do you always tell your spouse, children, and the local bully the "brutal truth"? When you tell the "brutal truth" be sure to accept the consequences of the cause and effect you set in motion. If the world will not believe the terrorism taking place by Jihad, a cartoon isn't going to make a difference.
James 4 August 2009 - 5:13pm
If its not going to make a difference then why is it a problem? "The cartoons which portray Mohammed and Islam in a negative way does not persuade but deepens the hate." I don't think Muslim hate could get any deaper, and watching violent, childish, psychotic reactions to a cartoon gives people an idea of how dangerous Islam in their country really is. Islam is the bully, and yes people should be told the brutal truth. "When you tell the "brutal truth" be sure to accept the consequences of the cause and effect you set in motion." Spoken like a true Muslim, if you tell the truth their will be consequences. You are correct, telling the truth about Islam can have consequences, just ask Theo Van Gough. You really picked apart that closing sentence, why don't you try reading the entire comment.
Hiram 5 August 2009 - 1:44am
"Spoken like a true Muslim, if you tell the truth their will be consequences." No, not a "true Muslim" or Muslim. In fact a Knight Templar, who agreed with the substance of your opinion but just disagreed with insulting people via cartoons. Insulting millions of people does not help the fight against terrorism, it hinders.
Steve 24 July 2009 - 3:15pm
"The mere fact that terrorism is done in the name of Islamic Jihad should convey the "brutal truth" to the world but it still does not." Great point. Even the comments many imams have made about taking over Europe and eventually the US, Canada, and Australia are widely ignored. A 1 Billion plus army has been making threats against the West for centuries, it is time we start taking them seriously. If China (1 Billion +) was making threats against any country it would be global front page news. I can not figure out why these threats are so widely ignored. The Ummah theory in Islam states that all Islamic countries belong to one global Islamic nation. This is proven by the fact that whenever there is a conflict citizens of countless Islamic nations come to martyr themselves against the infidels in the name of Allah. The West needs to realize they are dealing with one giant political and human force instead of a collection of smaller nations.
