Former United States president Bill Clinton has held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
Mr Clinton is attempting to mediate the release of two US journalists who were sentenced to hard labour in June for allegedly crossing into North Korea illegally. The former president and Kim Jong-il are said to have had an exchange of views on matters of common concern during dinner. The meeting is highly unusual as talks between North Korea and the outside world are usually conducted between senior diplomats.
The US administration has stressed that Mr Clinton is on a private mission and is not acting as a US envoy. The White House has flatly denied reports that Mr Clinton conveyed a message from US President Barack Obama.
