The 25th anniversary of the massive gas leak in Bhopal has been commemorated in India.
Thousands, possibly even tens of thousands of people died after poison gas leaked from a factory owned by US company Union Carbide in 1984. The factory made pesticides for agriculture.
The area around the factory has been severely polluted ever since. The drinking water of people living in the nearby shanty towns is still contaminated.
Activists say around 100,000 Indians are suffering from the consequences of the disaster. Many relatives never received any compensation. The activists have renewed demands that the company's then managing director be prosecuted.
Several security systems were not operational on the night of the disaster.
