Belgium has agreed to a plan to rent a Dutch prison in Tilburg to accommodate 500 Belgian prisoners. Brussels has a shortage of prison cells, while the Netherlands has a surplus.
Belgium will rent the prison for three years starting next year. The prison will be under Belgian management, but Dutch wardens will guard the prisoners. Belgian Justice Minister Stefaan de Clerck emphasised that he intends to end the prison shortage in his country as quickly as possible.
