Belgium hits back at Vatican over paedophilia raids

Published on : 29 June 2010 - 10:39am | By Vanessa Mock (photo: RNW)
More about:

Belgium and the Vatican are on a collision course after the Holy See accused the Belgian police of using communist tactics in their paedophilia raids on Catholic bishops last week. Belgium’s Foreign Minister told RNW that the Vatican should “react with balance” after its outspoken criticism of last week’s detention of senior clerics by the police.

Belgian police raided a bishop’s meeting in Mechelen near Brussels last Thursday amid fresh claims of child abuse by the Catholic Church. Investigators confiscated mobile phones, computers and also seized the computer files of a former cardinal.

The raids triggered an instant outcry from the Vatican, with the Vatican’s Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone calling the detentions “serious and unbelievable”. The Cardinal also accused investigators of holding the clerics for nine hours “without food and water” in methods “unprecedented even in communist regimes.”

The Belgian Foreign Minister, Steven Vanackere, underlined the Belgian judiciary’s independence from the Church and its freedom to investigate.

“It’s good to [keep in mind] very important principles of the state of law. [There are] very elementary principles of having a separation of powers and accepting that the judiciary has to do its work,” Mr Vanackere told RNW. “That’s crucial for every democratic state.”

“Deplorable methods
The Brussels prosecutor’s office said the raid followed a string of accusations “denouncing abuse of minors committed by a certain number of Church figures.” Belgium’s Catholic Church has been in turmoil ever since April when a string of revelations of child abuse by its priests which saw 73-year old Roger Vangheluwe, its longest-serving bishop, resign after admitting to sexually abusing a boy for years.

On Sunday, the Pope wrote a message of support to Andre-Joseph Leonard, Archbishop of Mechelen and the head of the Belgian bishops’ conference, blasting the use of “deplorable methods”.

Mr Vanackere said he understood the concerns:

“It is perfectly normal that on diplomatic level explanations are asked…. but if it emerges that disproportionate measures were used, then it’s a problem for the Belgian judiciary not for the Vatican.”

Kris Peeters, the Minister-President of Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region where the Mechelen diocese is situated, added:

“I can understand that it’s a very emotional case, but we must be calm and wait for the explanations from the judges and investigating judges. It’s very important that should be a total investigation of the possible crimes committed and to… respect all the [parties] involved.”

Probe
His comments came just hours after the mass resignation of the Catholic Church-backed commission set up to probe hundreds of reported cases of abuses. The commission’s chief, Peter Andriaenssens, stood down owing, he said, to a breach of confidentiality.

“We are pulling out. The debate must now take place between victims, political leaders, the judiciary, the church and public opinion,” said Mr Andriaenssens.

Belgian Justice Minister Stefaan De Clerck said in a statement that urgent talks would be held to look into “the difficulties resulting from the treatment by the judicial system of facts brought to its knowledge by the Catholic Church commission.”

Investigations into church child abuse are also underway in the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and North America following a domino-like sequence of paedophilia allegations this spring.

To Messenger and/or Anonymous: You are not only the hypocrite and sick-minded but you are also full of hate. It’s time that the Catholic Church criminals and their accomplices are brought to justice.

Anonymous 5 July 2010 - 7:27pm / USA

The Vatican should take a lesson from th Belgium civil authorities. From reports, they went in during the daylight hours, announced themselves publicly, and apparently followed a well orchestrated plan to get the information they need to make their lawful investigation into clergy sexual abuse. The Vatican on the otherhand "investigate" secretly in an espionage manner to prove the victims allegations of sexual abuse by clergy not to have happened. It's no wonder the Belgium authorities chose to act so boldly. I like the straightforwardness of their actions.

The head of the Catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Church Is Cardinal Levada. I personally fought with the rapist protector in San Francisco for years. If you would like prrof of the atrocities this hypocrite has committed while he was in SF, check out my video on youtube.

The truth is hard to deny. As far as the priest abuse of children issue goes, the pope and catholic bishops have lost their moral authority i the whole world. They ignored complaints by abused people, denied allegations, blamed victims, reassigned offenders, failed to report crimes to police, and concealed information. The so-called "church" is anything but a moral institution. Either it should be reformed or dismantled.

Joey Piscitelli 5 July 2010 - 5:10am / USA

I am a victim of violent sex abuse by a despicable Catholic Priest, and I won a case against him in court. In the last ten years, I have been responsible for removing several abusive priests in my area, and I can tell you that only 1% of children who were abused by priests ever come forward. Thirty million people have left the Catholic Church recently for a reason, and that reason is because it is inundated with child abusers, and those who protect them. The typical child abuser, and those who protect them, can be seen vocally printing on forums like this, attacking people who want to remove the pedephiles from having access to children. The reason why these people are so vocal and angry at those who point out the criminal activities of the Catholic Criminal Syndicate, is because they sympathize with rapists. I have fought on the front lines for ten years against child rapists, and those who defend them. What happened in Belgium is justice forcing it's way to the forefront, to protect kids. Although you can not stop rapist supporters from posting on forums like this, it doesn't matter, the Catholic Molestation Machine is crumbling all over the world, and so are the rapists that run it, and the vocal rapist supporters are frustrated and babbling.

We will see how effective the Belgium raid was when we learn what the search warrant uncovers. I think Barbara Blaine, founder of SNAP, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said it well in this piece:

There really is no point to you anymore frank. You really need help. Your a man enraged with half of the story and you think you have the whole thing. Not only that you talk like your from one of those cultist sects out for blood. I also think you read to much into whats that, a newspaper? Your a very unrealistic man. Every day we are fed what the media tells us, it doesn't exactly mean it is true. Just because a newspaper article says something doesn't mean you believe it. Why don't you just go talk to the pope or some one close to him and find out what really might of happened or why instead of being such an ingnorant man. Your the type of man that if people followed you alot of people would get hurt. No one wants to cover this whole thing up or take the focus off of what happened. People just want to find healing and make ammends and your crying for all out war, something I don't think you know anything about or you wouldn't be crying for it. The Pope is no more evil than you and I. He has no army, and I don't think he wants one. Instead of crying out for justice through blood, why don't you spend more time finding healing for those who are hurt. You don't have your facts straight at all and all you do is rant like some bitter old man. You haven't even had the courage to tell people what you really are and now your trying to rebuke God's Messenger by calling me the devil. The only one who needs to be rebuked is you. Your to prideful a man. I will no longer correspond with you at all. There is no point with arguing with a man who is to stuck in his awful ways and wont come to his senses.
I and no other that I know of want to take any focus away from the problem, the point was to show that the problem is not the church, but the problem exsists all over the place now. The point was to show that the real problem, the problem that caused all these priests and nuns to do what they did is no different than what is happening in other institutions. The church gets all the coverage. They don't. How sad. The real problem started in the 1960's and 1970's during what is known as the sexual revolution. Born from it was pornography, strip clubs, molestation was on the rise after it came out, so were rapes, murders of woman, more Ted Bundy's were born from it. And this has become a huge problem all over the world. Why people have made the church the only exception is very closed minded. And if thats the way people will think, then even if you did change the church the real problem will never be solved and it will happen again. You cry out for justice frank and what right do you have to say anything. Your not a victim yourself and you have nothing to do with it. Just a poor man looking for something to do. The truth is you cannot state facts. All your information is second hand and your a fool because you automaticly just believed what you read and what you were told. Not to mention you view is twisted, the more and more you say, the more you give yourself away. You do belong to a cultist group brought up on a belief that is founded on bitterness and hatred. And that is not God, and that is not love. As a final parting gift for you Frank, I leave you this prayer and if you'de like you can translate it and find out what it means.
Crux Sancte Patris Benedicte, Crux Sacra sit mihi lux, non draco sit mihi dux, vade retro satana, num saude mihi vana, sunt mala que libas, ipse venarari bibis. You are now in the hands of Jesus our lord. May He teach you well. No more games frank. You are not serious about any of this. If your not some old man who is bitter at the world, your some kid sitting at a computer who knows nothing but to come to this forum and cause trouble. This was meant for more serious people. Not people filled with hatred like you. And finally, really this time, Good bye.

One final parting gift for a bitter old man with the personality of a kid. Your not a victim, but you think your helping the victims. All your doing is prolonging their pain by asking for more. Would anyone want to follow a washed up, old psycotherapist with no morals who is bitter at the world after he says something like this:

Kink pales in comparison to the sexual violence visited upon children and vulnerable by Catholic priests and nuns.

Frank A. Lostaunau
SNAP (Survivors Network Of Those Abused By Priests)

So Frank, I guess that means rape, Bondage of people, and pornography are ok according to you. And your fighting against what you said pales in comparison. Your saying the very things that started this whole mess are alright, but yet lets go after the people it affected. Your not fighting for a solution to anything, your only causing more of a mess. Haven't you figured it out yet Frank, the victims were hurt by the abusers, the abusers became abusers after being victims themselves and the vicious cycle continues. Why don't you rise up against the real problem. I had expected more from an intelligent psycotherapist washed up at the bitter old age of his 70's. No wonder why your not in the right mind. I know your heart wants to reach out to the victims, I know you want to do good and it angers you for what happened to these poor people. But even a man at your age must know by now that the problem goes beyond the church. Think about it Frank, put it all togeather, I don't believe your as stupid as you've demonstrated. I admire your passion, but I think your letting the anger get the better of you and your suffering from a one track mind. If you really want to solve the problem you must know what the real problem is. You don't even know why the abusers did what they did to these poor victims. If you find that out and you can see it, you can start battling the real problem and if you battle that, your making a future for all, no more abusers, no more victims. Can you admitt that the problem is bigger than just the church and that the problem goes beyond that? If you can't admitt that than your not doing anything except holding signs on sidewalks and adding fuel to the fire instead of making it better. Or maybe thats it, you really are just a crazy old man. So wich is it Frank, are you going to fight the real problem or are you just going to stand on street corners with signs and make a name for yourself? Even you know that there is still good Catholics, good priests and Nuns who are trying. You have met them, but your to bitter to give them a chance. Even they have suffered under these individuals who abused victims, these good catholics suffered trying to make things right and the abusers hurt them to. But atleast these good catholics never gave up believing that good could still be done. But you did. And I see why with the pain on your old face. Your face is written with bitterness and that hurt has blinded you. You can't have justice without good frank. There are still good Catholics out there trying to help to make things right. They were oppressed to by these abusers. They were persecuted by these abusers for living their faith. Imagine your own Bishop persecuting you for going to Mass or praying the Rosary, for living the faith the way it was meant to be. If you can put your bitterness aside, and trust these good catholics, I'm sure they will help you, help the victims, and help make the church into the good it was meant to be. If you respond arrogantly to this than you have shown yourself an incapable man. And I feel sorry for anyone who will follow you. You will have shown your true intent was to never help the victims at all. After all, I being a victim of sexual abuse has affected me my whole life, and you never offered to help me. You told me I was never a victim. Sounds like you've made yourself quite the hypocrite. The only difference between me and you Frank is that when we looked into the abyss, you blinked. I went all the way and your still only half way. I hope you will consider what I have said if you are in the right mind and seek a better resolution than calling for justice through anger. If you don't, no peace will come to you or the victims.

NEW YORK TIMES, July 2, 2010, World/Europe Section: There is a 5 page article which addresses the issue of Cardinall Ratzinger and Pope John Paul II, having been able to HALT Catholic clergy sex abuse as early as 1990. Pope Paul and Cardinal Ratzinger chose not to protect children and vulnerable adults from clergy sexual predators.

The world will be a better place when the sexual offenders and their ENABLERS are held accountable in a court of law. PROTECT CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS FROM SEXUAL PREDATOR PRIESTS AND NUNS.

Anonymous or Messenger? Messenger or Anonymous? VERY VERY FUNNY! ANONYMOUS + MESSENGER = DEVIL! El Diablo!

What is most curious about the DEVIL is that he can dish it out but he cannot take it when it comes back in his face. Very curious indeed?

I repeat Diablo! BEGONE!

MAY BLESSINGS AND PEACE BE UPON YOUR SOULS MES PETITES!

Frank Lostaunau 2 July 2010 - 8:08pm

The Pope has announced to the world that EVIL lives within the Vatican. He failed to mention the most Evil: Levada, Hoyos, Sodano, Bertone and of course, himself, the Pope!

The international community is closely watching the Pope and his Pedo-Apologists scramble to cover-up their crimes against innocent children and vulnerable adults. There will be no peace in the Vatican until justice has been served.

I strongly admire the Belgian officials that raided and secured the files of sexually abused survivor's. Information will be used to convict the perpetrators of horrific crimes against the innocent. The Catholic priest's and nuns responsible for raping children will be held accountable.

The Pope and his dear enablers are no longer able to control the flow of information. Soon, massive disclosures of crimes against humanity will surface in Africa, South America, and the Carribe. Again, the world will be shocked and in time, the perpetrators will be held accountable for their crimes against humanity. The Pope and his legions can run but they cannot hide. The world is watching. SHAME!

Frank Lostaunau 2 July 2010 - 7:01am

It's amusing to learn that Messenger and Anonymous are the same person! funny...

The Pope and his army of pedophile priests and nuns can run but they cannot hide. The world is watching...shame, shame, shame.

The pedo-apologists are out in full force trying to shift the focus away from the Pope and the criminal behavior of his priests and nuns; they are trying to whitewash crimes against innocent children and vulnerable adults by attempting to minimize the sexual abuse of innocents. When the full scope of their criminal behavior is fully realized, the world will weep. The plants and animals will weep. There will be great sorrow in the heavens. It could have been prevented. Indeed, as the Pope himself has admitted, EVIL lives within the Vatican.

The Pope has destroyed the trust. When one destroys trust, there can be no social cooperation.

messenger 2 July 2010 - 7:26am

The pope is not responsible for what individuals themselves poorly decided to do. I only have one more word to descibe you frank .......Coward. By the way, your a very paranoid person. Just because I forgot to put messenger in where it already says anonymous doesn't mean I was trying to hide anything or I would have not made reference to myself in what I wrote. Run and hide frank. No one is running and hiding, priests and nuns, the pope are not hiding. They are out there trying to help those who were hurt by all this mess. Wich is more than your doing. All your doing is sitting your fat lazy butt in front of a computer and writting things that make no sense what so ever. By the way coward, hypocrite, you still haven't told people who you really are. I finally wash my hands of you. But I will not give hope that one day you will come to your senses. Goodbye you lonely, lonely angry little man.

messenger 2 July 2010 - 7:16am

I was right. You don't have the guts. And your more crazy and outlandish than first thought. Get help frank. You are a very mixed up man. If I wanted to really focus attention from those responsible away I think that would make me just as poor a man as you. But I've been saying all along to help the victims and the abusers, to give good people a chance to make it right. No one has destroyed trust frank, you have stopped believing that good can still be accomplished. You are a very poor listner frank. And if the pope said that, I think you have missconstrued what he meant. I'm done wasting my time with you frank. By the way you still haven't been honest with any one here about yourself. I knew you wouldn't be. You can't, your to afraid. I will pray for you. May you find peace in yourself Frank. I have stated my peace and I hope people will see what I have said and not give into people like you who have a warped sense of what God and the situation is all about. I have not given up and I hope others wont give up either on staying hopeful for a better solution and good for all. The only man who has displayed himself poor of heart is you frank. If you do not choose to change and get help frank, God will knock you off your horse, men like you don't last very long. I hope you don't have to fall to hard before you realize what you have done is hurtful and wrong. Goodbye Frank.

Frank Lostaunau 2 July 2010 - 6:32am / USA

Are Messenger and Anonymous the same person? strange...

messenger 2 July 2010 - 7:01am

Its attitudes like yours frank, that make the world a worse off place than it was. And men like you have no solutions to make the situation better. You only strive to make it worse. You cannot offer hope to people, you haven't even tried. All you have offered is your own worthless anger and no sense to it. The Pope has done more good than you in one day, than you have in your life so far. And yet all you will do is insult him to, and you know nothing about him, you know nothing about what a catholic believes, you have no idea what Mass is or what its all about. All you can do is offer your impulsive unreasonable anger. Men like you fall quickly by the wayside. Your a sad man if your a christian. But I don't even think your that. Why don't you tell people what you really believe and I'm sure people will see you for what you really are. But I think your to full of fear to say that. All you will do is give more insults and they will go no where. If you were out to win this one frank, your not. You can't fight truth and atleast I can offer people that.

messenger 2 July 2010 - 6:44am

Yes of course myself and anonymous are the same person. Don't be so quick to judge.Forgive the mistake if you are capable of forgiveness frank. Care to be reasonable today or are you just going to put out more insults? By the way, care to tell people yet what you really are and why your really here? I don't think you have the guts. The only thing strange is how dishonest you have been with people and why your bent on causing nothing more but a fight. You have said nothing reasonable. Nor do you really respond to what anyone has said. Your just an angry little man off in your own world. Respond to me when you feel like saying something rational until then your to be ignored. May you find the help you need and walk away from being such hypocrite.

Frank Lostaunau 1 July 2010 - 12:10am

It must be extremely disturbing to the PEDO-APOLOGISTS knowing that they can't control the global negative press that the Pope and his pedo-army are experiencing daily!

Messenger and Uriel are so wrapped up with rage that it's eating them alive.

How does feel knowing that you can't control the Pope's global nightmare? You can't make it go away can you...that's what is eating you up!

Messenger 1 July 2010 - 7:44am

I expected a better response. But you have shown you are lacking. Instead of sticking to the conversation you yourself gave in to your own anger and came back with something out of desperation. I pity you. I'm sorry to dissapoint you but no, rage is not eating me alive over this. I only wish to speak the truth and help people to put away things that are not logical or even the case. No, I don't wish to control anything, there is nothing to control. Wich leads me to think that you perhaps struggle with anger, and are a controling person yourself. Your a projectionist. What you cannot face in yourself you blame onto others. You have made that evidently clear. As for a nightmare, again, I have faced the devil himself and yes unfortunetly he is just as real as you and I. If you want a real nightmare, yes I have faced worse. The pope is not concerned with this being some nightmare and I doubt he goes to bed at night sweating away. Instead I think he remains hopeful just as I do, to make moves if the world will let him, to make up for all the wrong things that his fellow brothers in Christ have done. There is still good people in the church. Those who want to make things right again and make sure it doesn't happen again. But you must give those people a chance to do so. As far as anything eating me up, no it isn't. What is really dissapointing instead is the lack of understanding men like you have. And who are you to judge. You have done wrong things to people in your own life. Maybe you don't understand because you never made up for the things you did wrong to them. But you have never done that have you. All you can say is things like you wrote and " messenger give it a rest". But you like others will not lift one finger. All you will do is criticize. Wich tells me you know not a thing about what is really happening. All you know is that hearing about it makes you angry. You know those feelings, but you don't know anything else. Wich means you are in no position to talk about the crisis at hand or make sound rational judgements on any of it. When some one is wounded, you don't give them a gun and tell them to keep fighting, because they are not in the right state of mind to do so. Not until they are healed do they see the big picture and are ready to do things the right you. And you need healing and better guidance in your life. I encourage you to go seek some kind of healing in your life for what ever is in your heart that caused you to write the things you have written on this page. Then perhaps you will come back with something more rational. May you find peace in the struggle with yourself and I wish this for you with all sincerity. Take care of yourself and be a better man than this.

Only some sick individuals who need help. Before I was telling Uriel not to call people idiots, but I'm starting to agree, you really are an idiot. And I don't mean any insult in calling you that. messenger 2 July 2010 - 6:35am

By the way, today they caught an airline pilot who had several child porn files on his computer. Does that mean we should start going after all airline pilots and airline companies? And this only the one we have heard about second hand from the media. Do you know statisticly there are more doctors and dentists in jail for child abuse than there are priests? If you were to take all the people in jail all over the world and count them that were convicted of child abuse, they would out number the reports on priests by a long shot? Abuse does not have a preference of what walk of life it comes from. But for some reason, everbody wants to make such a huge issue and pick on one place. Wich makes it obvious. This is not a matter of helping things with the church come to a good solution for all, this is an unjust persecution of the whole church and even the good it has to offer and its good people simply because they have stood by what they believe and people who don't agree with it, who have no tolerance, want to tear it down. That is what this is. You who were once friends of God, now stand before pilot yelling crucify Him. You hypocrites. Shall you be just as bad as the Nazis who persecuted the Jews? Is that what you have become, Just an angry mob out for blood looking for some one to pick on. You don't want to make the situation better, you want to persecute. That is sad. I had thought man kind would be better than this.
