Belgian troops are to remain in Afghanistan for at least another year. The Belgians were due to leave at the end of this year, but extended the mission at the request of the United States.

Brussels has also decided that Belgium will help train Afghan police officers.

Belgium has 600 soldiers in Afghanistan, many of them are involved the security of Kabul’s international airport. The rest are deployed in the northern city of Kunduz and the southern city of Kandahar.
