Belgian minister deplores milk waste

Published on 22 September 2009 - 1:59pm
More about:

Reacting to the wave of European milk demonstrations on Monday, Belgian Development Cooperation Minister Charles Michel says European farmers should send their produce to countries where people don't have enough to eat.

European farmers dumped their milk in protest against collapsed prices that threaten tens of thousands of producers with bankruptcy. Mr Michel intends submitting a proposal to the EU and the United Nations to redirect stockpiles of dairy produce to countries with food shortages. "Millions of litres are being thrown away, while every five seconds a child is dying from hunger somewhere in the world".

European farmers have recently seen rocketing costs for the production of milk, cheese and other dairy products under a phased removal of the European Union quotas which artificially propped up prices.
