Belfast Orange Order march ends in violence

Published on 13 July 2009 - 10:16pm
More about:

In the city of Belfast, in Northern Ireland, a march by members of a local Orange Order ended in violence when the Protestant marchers were pelted with firebombs and fireworks as they paraded through a Catholic neighbourhood. The Catholic residents were objecting to the marchers walking through their streets. Riot police used water cannons to restore order.

The Orange Order is a Protestant organisation based mainly in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Every year in July it holds marches to celebrate the victory of England's Protestant King William III over the Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The marches often lead to tension between members of the two faiths.
