Beach party victims still in hospital

Published on 24 August 2009 - 10:42am
More about:

Three of the people injured at the Sunset Grooves beach party near Hook of Holland are still in hospital. One is in a critical condition.

A massive fight broke out at the beach party on Saturday night and guns were fired. A 19-year old man from Rotterdam was shot dead, six people aged between 18 and 23 were wounded.

It's not clear how the fighting started and the gunmen have not been identified. Police attempted to intervene but were repelled by dozens of football hooligans armed with guns and knives.

Speaking at a press conference, Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said it was "a shocking incident with a tragic outcome". Socialist Party MP Ronald van Raak commented "Alcohol makes people aggressive and then there's no reasoning with them."

The chairman of the police union ACP, Gerrit van de Camp, has called for an investigation into whether the organisers did enough to prevent the violence. He added that some officers thought that there between 40,000 and 50,000 people present, while the permit was for 25,000.

Both the police and the organisers knew that football hooligans were planning to go to the party. The organisers say they could do nothing since it was a free event.
