More and more people throughout the world are dissatisfied with capitalism and think wealth should be more evenly distributed. A poll held by the BBC World Service in 27 countries reveals that attitudes have changed since the fall of the Berlin wall 20 years ago.
In 1989 capitalism was seen as the ideal system, but now most people asked think it needs to be reformed.
Only 11 percent of people are in favour of a completely free market economy. Most of them live in the United States and Pakistan.
In almost all other countries a majority think the government has a greater role to play in the economy. According to the researchers this is mainly because of this year's global economic crisis.
The break up of the Soviet Union was a good thing according to 80 percent of Americans and 75 percent of people in Germany, France and Great Britain. But people in Egypt, India and Indonesia do not agree. The former eastern block countries are divided over the issue. Most Russians and Ukrainians regret the break up whereas the Czechs and Polish are pleased with it.
