Baruani wins International Children's Peace Prize

Published on 3 December 2009 - 9:29pm
More about:

A 16-year-old refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been awarded the International Children's Peace Prize in The Hague. Baruani is an orphan who lives in a refugee camp in Tanzania.

He produces a radio programme called Children for Children which deals with the problems facing young refugees. The jury said: "Under the most impossible circumstances, Baruani has chosen to champion the rights of other children."

The prize was presented by Kenyan Nobel Prize laureate Wangari Maathai. The International Children's Peace Prize was first awarded in 2005. Included in the award is a cash prize of 100,000 euros to be spent on projects related to Baruani's fight for children's rights.
