More about:

The 3D film Avatar has broken box office records.

Since its release five weeks ago, box office takings have exceeded 1.8 billion dollars, which is more than Titanic in 1997 reports The Wall Street Journal.

Both films are directed by James Cameron. Avatar is about a soldier who goes on a mission to explore the planet of Pandora inhabited by a humanoid race, the Na'vi. He tries to protect the Na'vi from a plot to exterminate them and exploit a precious mineral on the planet.

In the Netherlands, a million people have seen the film.
