Avalanches kill dozens in Afghanistan

Published on 9 February 2010 - 2:33pm
More about:

At least 28 people have been killed by avalanches in Afghanistan. Around 70 people have been injured.

Falling snow blocked the exits to a road tunnel in the Salang pass, trapping hundreds of people. Many of the victims froze to death or were suffocated by exhaust fumes.

So far soldiers and police have been able to free around 1,500 people, but rescue efforts are being hampered by snow and strong winds.

The Salang pass in the Hindu Kush mountains links the capital Kabul with the north of Afghanistan.
