In Rome, the transport ministers of Austria and Italy have signed a definite agreement on the construction of the Brenner rail tunnel through the Alps.
The rail tunnel is intended to reduce lorry traffic across the Brenner Pass and Tyrol. The 56-kilometer tunnel must be completed by 2022. Only in February, it was not certain construction of the tunnel would go ahead because Austria and Italy were then unable to secure financing for the project.
